| Learn About Organic Products |
| What does 'ORGANIC' really mean? |
Scientifically speaking, 'organic' can refer to anything that contains carbon. Many skin care and cosmetics companies use the words 'natural' and 'organic' on their packaging, yet their product may contain less than 1% natural ingredients.
In the context of skin care products at Pukka, 'organic' and 'natural' refer to products that have been produced with as little human interference as possible, thereby preserving the beneficial properties of the source ingredients. Products are as pure as they can be - the way nature intended.
Many products contain 'Certified Organic' ingredients. This refers to the way in which they have been farmed and manufactured. An organic farm operates without any synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, is run in an environmentally sustainable way, and strictly adheres to organic farming regulations.
Organic farms are assessed regularly by organic certification bodies, such as the OFC (Organic Food Chain) or the BFA (Biological Farmers of Australia).
One step further, and you encounter brands whose entire product range has been Certified Organic. This ensures that every product in the range contains 70-100% Certified Organic ingredients, and the production process is as environmentally sustainable as possible.
Pukka stocks a number of Certified Organic brands, including Jasmin Skincare, Mukti Botanicals and Sanctum. |
What's so BAD about chemical-based products? |
In the conventional beauty industry, most companies are focused only on the bottom line. To grow profits, cheap ingredients and fillers are used - and they often provide no benefits to the skin whatsoever, despite claims to the contrary. Take a closer look at the ingredients list on any mainstream cosmetic or skin care product - we urge you to question what you see.
The skin is an amazing organ which has the ability to look after itself very well, and skin care products should be used to assist and improve its natural funtioning, and protect it from harsh climates. Applying chemicals to the skin will achieve very little, and can often lead to increased sensitivity, irritation, or allergic reaction.
Although some chemical-based products may seem to achieve a result, they are usually just achieving the appearance of a result. For example, a moisturiser may appear to increase moisture in your skin, however it is usually just creating a layer over your skin to keep the moisture in, and actually prevents the skin from breathing properly.
Applying chemicals to your skin is also a risk to your health, given that the skin absorbs around 60% of what is put on it, much like a sponge. As there has been very little research on the long-term effects of using chemical-based skin care and cosmetics, there are many questions over their safety.
The environmental impact of chemical-based beauty products is another aspect that should not be ignored. Many products use ingredients that have been sourced from crude oil, which is not a renewable resource.
Pukka is committed to supporting brands that are as environmentally sustainable as possible. |
What's so GOOD about natural products? |
Products made from natural ingredients are better than those made from chemical, man-made ingredients for many reasons.
1. They often achieve better, longer-lasting results. Rather than working against the skin, natural ingredients work in synergy with it, assisting it to function to the best of its ability.
2. There is virtually no risk of future health problems, and much less risk of irritation or adverse reactions.
3. They are more environmentally friendly. If purchasing Certified Organic products in particular, you will be supporting the Earth.
4. Many natural products use aromatherapy in their formulations, which can improve your mood and overall wellbeing. They usually smell much nicer too! |
